Projection mapping [the practice of sculpting video content to match the surface geometry it’s being projected on] is not necessarily a new technique, though it’s rapidly increasing in both popularity and complexity among the masses...making it more difficult for companies producing the content to stay competitive in the craft. Leviathan worked with frequent collaborator and renowned VJ Vello Virkhaus on groundbreaking performance visuals for electronic musician Amon Tobin, creating ethereal CG narratives and engineering the geometry maps for an entire stage of stacked cube-like structures. Taking the performance further, the Leviathan team also developed a proprietary projection alignment tool to ensure quick and accurate setup for the show, along with custom Kinect control & visualization utilities for Amon to command. The results for all have been outstanding: after the show debuted, it was featured in such publications as Fast Company and Wired.

BNS | Mitchum Love Thy Pits "Lie"

Together with director of photography Eric Treml, Jonathan and the BNS team used the ARRI Alexa digital camera system to capture their HD source footage during three days of production on-stage.

"We essentially painted animation on people's skin, using a fusion of digital and practical techniques," Jonathan explained. "After exploring different ways of accomplishing the desired effect, we filmed people with real paint on their skin, then we animated artwork using traditional cel animation techniques, where we matched the practical paint used in the live-action shoot. The animation was then composited onto their skin using seamless digital visual effects."

BNS artists tracked the form of the human body using mocha, then animated what they wanted on the body using cel animation with hand-drawn artwork. They then projected their animation onto the tracked body and composited the work in Nuke to make it feel like actual paint. Final color was handled in Autodesk Flame.

Nike 6.0 | The Pool

The Pool was more than a BMX comp, it was one of the most extra-ordinary gatherings of the BMX community this century.

From the draining of a soon to be demolished local authority swimming pool in Dagenham, East London, into a world class park in less than two weeks was a feat in itself, but to see the diversity and level or riding on display at the launch event was truly remarkable.

40 international riders with a brand new team format saw non-comp riders, veterans, street destroyers and park animals all throw down into something far better than we could have dreamt of.

Niles Heckman | The BS of D - Toughest Skin

"A full confession regarding this piece is that it was initially motivated more by a tool than by a story, and my goal as a story teller is to of course not make a habit of this. Metaio | The Big Picture of Augmented Reality

While tablet computing may in future transform the whole computer industry, it is already changing the way we look at augmented reality. And this is not only because of the big display. More and more different devices for multiple OS platforms are expected to appear on the market, equipped with advanced sensors such as high-resolution cameras. The cost of data roaming is likely to drop and considering the millions of people expected to buy such a device in the next few years, there are incentives enough for optimizing augmented reality (AR) tablet software and to start creating really useful and fascinating applications taking full advantage of the promising, new capabilities. metaio, with its junaio 2.6 release, a junaio plug-in for third party app integration, and the revised mobile AR SDK Unifeye 2.5, is well prepared and ready to go for the next generation of AR applications.

Google | ROME

"3 Dreams of Black" is Chris Milk's new interactive film, created in WebGL with some friends from Google, for Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi's ROME, featuring Jack White & Norah Jones. The project is a Chrome Experiment that showcases some of the latest web technologies in modern browsers like Google Chrome.

In building "3 Dreams of Black", we've had the opportunity to build many tools, libraries, and models. We've fully opened up the source code and made it available for web developers to tinker with us at In addition to the code, a few other highlights include eight WebGL demos, a fun model viewer for interacting with some of the animals from the web experience, and the Three.js 3D library used for building the experience. In addition, a big part of the project was to define a good pipeline for getting all the animals and environment models right in WebGL -- for this, we extended Blender with custom plugins so we could manipulate and export the data with ease.

Renault | Facebook to the AutoRAI with RFID

Sharing your offline experience directly with your online friends.

Renault made it possible. By bringing the world of Facebook into the real world of the AutoRAI 2011. For the Amsterdam Motorshow we've created an innovative and real-time social sharing experience. At the largest automotive event of The Netherlands, 250.000 visitors could like Renault cars through a RFID Facebook card.

We placed specially made Facebook pillars in front of the Renault cars. By holding their pass in front of these pillars, a connection was made to their profile and the car was being "shared" on their wall. This way their offline car experience had been shared with their online friends.

At the Renault stand, car fans got a free card.
With this pass, visitors were able to login to their Facebook profile. Since the pass held a RFID-microchip which stored their username and password, it automatically became their Facebook connect card. Ready to LIKE one of the Renault cars at the AutoRAI.

Simple, innovative and fun.

The brief is simple: interpret and bring to life the idea of 'Hello, Future' in the form of a fantastic music video for one of Moby's tracks from his new album, 'Destroyed'.

The winner will be announced and their video screened at this year's New Directors' Showcase in Cannes, as well as on the Vimeo site.

Historically, many featured directors in the Showcase have gone on to seriously successful careers: Tarsem, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, Ivan Zacharias, Kinka Usher, Danny Kleinman and Jonathan Glazer included.

No pressure.

Submission deadline: midnight EST May 9, 2011

Leviathan | Marquee Nightclub

Matt Daly of Chicago's Leviathan and VSL's Bryant Place were the lead developers in creating the audio/video DJ FX app providing real-time control over the new Marquee media system and its generative, audio reactive computer graphics, just as they were for a similarly high-profile and mesmerizing project application in 2010 for Heineken, which was also produced by VSL for Corso Communications.

"Matt is a long-time colleague and collaborator of mine, and last year, when we wanted to create a real-time VJ tool to support a custom 360 visual performance system for Heineken's Inspire activations at live events, I got him involved," said Virkhaus. "For that project, Matt recommended TouchDesigner very strongly, and since then, we've all become completely obsessed with the software. The solution for Heineken incorporated multiple real-time HD video inputs, routed as a digital switcher with globally operable transfer modes. On top of it being the ultimate video router, we also incorporated the generative front end in real-time."

WoodKid | Iron

Woodkid - Iron from WOODKID on Vimeo.

Woodkid will undoubtedly be the first surprise of 2011. An unexpected arrival far from the manufactured buzz.

The young man, aged 28, has come with an EP of raw beauty, Iron. Woodkid is Yoann Lemoine, previously known for his career as a video director without fault (Yelle, Moby and more recently Katy Perry for "Teenage Dream").

The legend says that on a shoot in the USA, Woodkid received, straight from the hands of great American guitarist Richie Havens, a banjo that immediately replaced his piano, at least for a while. Without neglecting the videos (or film, which is part of projects), Woodkid decided to devote himself to music. Indeed, Yoann Lemoine made the video of Iron himself , which features Top Model Agyness Deyn.

The four tracks (plus two remixes of Iron by the English Mystery Jets and Gucci Vump, the duo of Brodinski and Guillaume Briere The Shoes), opens by the eponymous Iron, epic pop with a powerful mounted symphony, this first EP Woodkid (produced by Woodkid, Julien
Delfaud and Benjamin Lebeau also from The Shoes) immediately announces the influences of the young man.

We walk with the shadow of Antony and The Johnsons, Woodkid and Anthony could be kindred spirits of the voice. We can also hear the pretty folk influences of New York ("my heart belongs to Brooklyn, "sings Woodkid on the second track on the disc) and a melodic brilliance that leaves more than a glimpse of the song writing talent of Lemoine (which could flirt somewhere between Neil Hannon and Bonnie Prince Billy).

With ‘Iron’ we discover a universe of fragile grace. Four original songs, Iron, Brooklyn, Baltimore's Fireflies and Wasteland sometimes written on guitar, sometimes on piano, always with disconcerting ease, after one listen we are made feel like we are witnessing the creation of these wonderful stories with Woodkid himself.

DTS | The Speaker Orchestra

The Speaker Orchestra from Ross Ching on Vimeo.

"Every year DTS creates a promotional video for CES in Las Vegas. This year, the commercial production company I’m with wanted to do something different. They wanted to make something that people would replay, something that would stimulate people’s minds when they view it on their computer screen.

I think that inspiration comes from a lot of places. In the case of myself growing up in the Internet generation, much of my inspiration comes from there. It’s a hobby of mine — scouring the web for the newest and most original piece of work. So when I stumbled across this video, I instantly wanted to try it for myself." By Ross Ching

Solidarités International | World Water Day 2011

Water ink _ BDDP Unlimited and Solidarités International - UK from BDDP Unlimited on Vimeo.

To mark World Water Day, on March 22nd Solidarités International and its agency BDDP Unlimited will roll out a campaign to build awareness of the scourge of undrinkable water.

Today, it is estimated that 3.6 million people, including 1.5 million children under the age of 5, die every year of diseases borne by undrinkable water, making it the world’s leading cause of death.

Yet the public isn’t aware of it and political leaders do not demonstrate the drive it takes to end the terrible deaths. The campaign calls on journalists to spread awareness of this scourge and appeal to readers to sign a petition that will be personally handed to the French president during the 6th World Water Forum in March 2012. To evoke the silent and invisible threat of unhealthy water, BDDP Unlimited opted for a minimalist approach that is both visually appealing and surprising, using water and ink exclusively. The spot shows the power of ink to reveal the invisible.

The spot, created by BDDP Unlimited, produced by Hush and directed by Clément Beauvais, a young director, illustrator, musician and photographer. His multiple talents and mastery of various techniques enabled him to both create the drawings and direct the spot. The campaign will be seen from mid-March on TV, in cinemas, on the Internet and in print. A dedicated web site,, will gather signatures for the petition.
