In a virtual photo-realistic 3d world, an emperor penguin is fused with Gothic architecture, creating a new life form that is both organic and synthetic. A subverted narrative develops which attempts to reveal something about an uneasy and uncertain relationship with nature.

Title: Hollow Man
Artist: R.E.M.
Label: Warner Bros. Records
Director: Crush
Production Company: Crush, Toronto

Shot, designed and animated by Crush, Toronto

We first spoke to Michael Stipe at the end of February. He heard about us through the work we did last year for Doug Coupland’s new book, The Gum Thief. He wanted a video that was frantic and dense and not overly polished or fretted over. Michael has great instincts about what visuals are right for the song, but really allowed us to run with the clip, adding really good, insightful comments at the right times, even as the band began a punishing press tour to launch the new album.

When we first started talking to Michael about the meaning behind the lyrics, the song really struck a chord with us. We all fear losing who we are or getting so far down a path, either in career or personally, that we can’t get back. We wanted to build on that as our theme. The idea of isolation, the universality of that and to see how that moment of realization, the explosion of understanding changes your path.

From there we took a page from R.E.M.’s approach to writing and recording the new record. We wanted to take the “punk” aesthetic and represent it for 2008. We wanted to see the Hollow Man as a person (or in our case three people), as a digital avatar, or as a roughly drawn representation. We wanted the lyrics to stand out front, plain and confronting without losing their layers of meaning. We felt that the moment of understanding needed to feel like an explosion, and that dictated the rush of images, punctuated by moments of clarity (the falling man).

Crush works a bit like a band. We all have our roles but we collaborate, sometimes leading each other and sometimes following. The creative process was liquid and constantly changing. We knew where we wanted to go, but didn’t constrict ourselves early on, adding and subtracting until sometime around lunchtime on the day the video shipped. We started out feeling like typography was going to be the main device, then felt a hand animated section would give it the humanity the words needed, then as we explored, thought a live action representation would connect all the elements. The digital “avatar” came from Michael Stipe's comments about performing the song at SXSW, and it went on to becoming the symbolic heart of the video.

We used every toy in the building, shot footage in Stephanie (our producer’s) apartment, in our grubby stairwell, just generally got back to a place where all creative people start and then slowly get away from, to try to make pictures work like music.

Audio d-touch is a collection of applications for real-time musical composition and performance, with very special user interfaces. The collection includes a drum machine and a sampling sequencer, both are controlled by spatially arranging physical objects on an interactive table surface. Each object represents a sound, and its position with respect to the surface is mapped to certain playback parameters. For example, the horizontal position of an object represents the timing of the sound. The system is extremely low cost and now it can be freely and fully downloaded from http://www.d-touch.org/audio. All is needed to get audio d-touch to work is a standard computer (PC or Mac) with a webcam and a printer.

The Smart Chopper from Siemens and Orange County Choppers

Seimens unveiled the first custom electric motorcycle dubbed the “Seimens Smart Chopper.” The bike was designed and built by the prolific motorheads at Orange County Choppers. The chopper sports the signature OCC style but being electric it lacks the ground rumbling roar. OCC founder Paul Teutul Jr. admits that everyone loves loud pipes but points out that this bike is the future (check out the interview below).

Siemens Smart Chopper

The Smart Chopper rocks a 27 HP electric motor that has a max speed of 100 mph. You can go 60 miles on a charge but then will need about 5 hrs to recharge and hit the road again. On top of the energy efficient motor the bike is made with many recycle materials and adorned with water based paints. Daryl Dulaney, President & CEO of Siemens Building Technologies explains:

“We wanted to build this unique chopper to raise environmental awareness and reflect what the 69,000 employees of Siemens USA are doing to help America stay on the cutting edge of tomorrow’s green economy. Siemens is already very much a part of the fabric of America, and our portfolio is one of the greenest in the business. Green is not marketing hype for us; it is in our DNA.”

The bike will go on tour across the US then will be auctioned off in 2010 and the proceeds given to an environmentally focused charity. For more information check out the Siemens press release.

Cover creation for Macworld

Cover creation from Peter Belanger on Vimeo.

After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs.

On the technical side, for the time lapse video, I used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 24mm-70mm zoom. I chose the 5D because of its great image quality with high ISO's. Canon's sRAW1 gave me the flexibility of a RAW file with the file size of a jpeg. The actual Macworld cover was taken with a Phase One P65+ digital back attached to a 4x5 Sinar X camera with a 65mm lens.

Many thanks to Rob Schultz for allowing me to invade his office and literally shoot over his shoulder.

The music was used with permission by The Brokenmusicbox.

c4real made this film just to showcase their CG abilities. Cince they...just..love Porsches!

In house production took 4 weeks, rendering on a 8 core MacPro took 4 months non stop. All frames rendered at a minimum of 1 frame an hour, some took 24 hours per frame (the door opening took that long because of the blurry reflections). Everything was rendered in 1920x817 in Cinema4D. No Radiosity was used, only some area lights and a nice environment based on an EMC room.

Part 2 of this film is currently in production and is going to look even better than this one :D !
